The Curse Genesis 4:15: And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whoso-ever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. it was fouram on a Saturday morn that he walked home through the trembling light of dawn that he found her alone as he’d left her there and that, without a word, he stripped himself bare that he took the knife from his old coat and that, without a word, he ran it through her throat and to this day he couldn’t tell you why she had to die she was older than him, and wiser too she’d seen things he’d never seen done things he’d never do he thought of her smile as he ran from the place though memories fade, to the end he’d be lost in her face and to this day he couldn’t tell you why she had to die he fled into the night: sought the quietude of travel but though he ran a thousand roads, her dying face would not unravel he shot straight through to Sydney where the blackened buildings weep but the burning lights and clacking trains tampered with his sleep in Melbourne he smoked opium and it helped to keep him warm – but it filled his mind with nightmares all dripping with her form he fled back to the country where this nightmare had been born to the white gums and the quiet dawn and to this day he couldn’t tell you why she had to die in cars and bars he talked to men under the stars he talked to women they told him stories and he told them lies sometimes his true story nearly let slip it was a darkness clawing from his past and the Kooris they all shunned him another cursed man, but not the last after a time he met a girl a pretty girl to share his sorrow he loved her like a saviour, she loved him like tomorrow he was older than her someone she could trust and her young curves washed his pain away in lust they got a place by the edge of town – from the porch they’d watch the sun go down and it was fouram on a Saturday morn that she walked home through the trembling light of dawn that she found him alone as she’d left him there and that, without a word, she stripped herself bare that she found that knife in his old coat and that, without a word, she ran it through her throat and to this day she couldn’t tell you why he had to die

A Father's Song Who will care for you when I'm gone? Who will comfort you in the night? Who will hold your delicate hands? Who will tend to your light? I remember when you were born, There was lightning in the sky, All of us bowed our heads and we sang, It was a wonderful night. I remember when you first laughed, The heavens rejoiced, We all wept: you couldn't understand: We'd been saved by your voice. Who will care for you when I'm gone? Who will comfort you in the night? Who will hold your delicate hands? Who will tend to your light? I remember when you first walked, All the world walked beside you, I remember when you first talked And all of your words were new. I was there the first time you cried, I felt like I couldn't breathe, I won't be there the next time you cry, I don't know where I'll be. Who will care for you when I'm gone? Who will comfort you in the night? Who will hold your delicate hands? Who will tend to your light?

Fireflies (free) 02:58
Fireflies Verse 1 Dancing with a mouth full of birds Listen to the echoing Sounds shatter on the ice A woman’s voice is trapped Inside infinity Fireflies seep from my skull To hug the night’s trembling knees Thrusting our bodies inwards We burst a swarm of bumblebees Verse 2 Surrounded me and lifted me to the wind They are tiny dreams Swarming on the innocent sleep Crushing my serenity Shaking all the leaves that have caked Around my cold and squirming brain Oh, there was a mist there was a flame: Smothered by the small things Bridge And I sensed and abyss And I closed my eyes And I filled with light And I’m grinning Verse 3 I feel like Churchill Sipping whiskey Hitler eating teacakes I feel like Whitlam yelling ‘cunt!’ At gov’nor generals in his sleep Bridge And I swallowed the night And I closed my eyes And I filled with light And I’m grinning Chorus Every moment is a moment’s perfection a thousand dreams are fulfilled every second a billion more are crushed to dust on the rocks of time: it’s all in the back of my mind This is the place where I first saw her face her face that could trace the dimensions of the space where I found a tiny grain of sand took it in my hand and read eternity in it Every moment is a moment’s perfection a thousand dreams are fulfilled every second a billion more are crushed to dust on the rocks of time: It’s all in the back of my mind It’s all in the back of my mind It’s all in the back of my mind It’s all in the back of my mind It’s all in the back of my mind

Johnston Street The world goes on and on and us Inside of it I see it every time I close my eyes The stars explode and die In spite of us While armies march while women kneel and pray Beneath a speckled dripping moon I came undone I swallowed dirt and spat it out as gold If the sun devour the earth will space Recall at all That songs and live once drifted through the void Well there’s only one way to say…. I kissed my girl and felt her lips Were warm and red And I cried for monks and prayed for their release I found god on Johnston street And I left him there Begging for change and the sound of the rain in his ears And there’s only one way to say…. Can I take you to the edge of this storm? Where the meadows are drinking the mist? Where the trees have forgotten their names? Where there’s nothing in the world but this: That life should go on and go on, like a flower that blooms on the sea, like a leper who dances and sings, like this river in me That is free And they say “Go on” And it goes on And it goes on

about

Recorded this strange artefact at my home in Heidelberg West (the 'Bronx' of Melbourne, supposedly - whatever that means) - it has a strange charm and - if apprehended correctly - an uplifting and life-affirming trajectory. Plus a murder ballad.
N. B. This album officially includes a cover of the Townes van Zandt song 'Marie' - but right now I can't afford the licensing fee so...
